Cognitive Athletic Training in Basketball. Training Strength, Endurance, Speed, Coordination, and Cognitive Abilities

Memmert, D. & König, S. (2026). Cognitive Athletic Training in Basketball. Training Strength, Endurance, Speed, Coordination, and Cognitive Abilities. (Band 4). Berlin: Springer Nature.

Abstract
This volume on Cognitive Athletic Training in Basketball explores which games and exercise formats can train cognitive abilities alongside the athleticism and motor skills of basketball players. As the fourth book in the Cognitive Athletic Training series, it is marked by its clear structure, which is divided into theoretical and practical parts. With essential theory provided in the first part, the practical section presents exercises and games accompanied by numerous photos and illustrations, allowing easy understanding and straightforward implementation in training routines. It provides guidance and exercises designed to train athleticism, motor abilities, and cognitive skills for all ability levels, ranging from novices in physical education to highly accomplished basketball players. Particular emphasis is placed on anticipation, perception, attention, creativity, intelligence, and memory, alongside the motor abilities of strength, endurance, speed, and coordination.

This book is structured in a clear didactic and methodological approach, featuring numerous examples and offering a concise, well-organized presentation in the theoretical section. Numerous photos illustrate the implementation of the various games and exercises in the practical section, which constitutes the main part of the book.

This book represents a first step toward a holistic training approach that combines physical skills and cognition. It offers a wide range of exercises that allow readers to make their training more varied and at the same time more targeted.

This volume in the Cognitive Athletic Training series provides a valuable reference for basketball players, coaches, and physical education teachers seeking evidence-based guidance on cognitive athletic training.

Effectiveness of a self-compassionate writing intervention. Findings from an experi-mental study

Schwarzer, N.-H., Dietrich, L., König, S. & Kieschke, U. (2026). Effectiveness of a self-compassionate writing intervention. Findings from an experi-mental study. Current Psychology, 2026(45).

Abstract
Background: Self-compassionate writing may offer a promising approach for integrating brief mental health interventions into the daily routines of student teachers. It may support them in them in recognizing, reevaluating and coping with their worries and fears. The current study: The aim of the current study was to assess the effectiveness of a 20-minute self-compassionate writing intervention. It was hypothesized that student teachers of the intervention group would report higher well-being, lower symptom distress, and a better mood compared to the participants in two control groups. Methods: Data were collected using an experimental design, with 241 student teachers randomly assigned to one of three groups: an experimental group and two control groups. Well-being, symptom distress, and negative mood were measured before and after the intervention through questionnaires. No manipulation check was included. The hypotheses were tested using mixed-design ANOVAs. Results: Results indicate that a 20-minute self-compassionate writing intervention was associated with small to medium short-term improvements in self-reported well-being and current mood. Conversely, the self-compassionate writing intervention did not show an association with changes in symptom distress. Discussion: When incorporated into regular routines, self-compassionate writing interventions may support well-being and current mood in student teachers and can be implemented in teacher education with minimal effort.

Kids’ motives of sport participation and the image of handball–a qualitative approach to increasing the number of child members

König, S., Uhl, E. & Braun, A. (2026). Kids’ motives of sport participation and the image of handball–a qualitative approach to increasing the number of child members. Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, 8.

Abstract
Membership in the German Handball Federation (DHB) has been declining across all age groups for around 10 years, at least until 2022. Specifically, this trend is reflected in a loss of almost 30% of teams in the younger age groups and even in one third in the age groups of juveniles. For handball in Germany, this is a worrying development. It raises questions about both reasons for this development and how a leading sport association should tackle the problem to ensure a sustainable future of its own sport. These demands were explored in a cooperative project between Weingarten University of Education and the German Sport University Cologne in collaboration with the German Handball Federation. Our common theoretical basis was the motive-image-fit approach. It assumes that children and young people only turn to handball or remain loyal to it if the subjective perception of this sport (image) and the motive structures of the children and young people match. Against this backdrop, two research questions took center stage aiming at children's motives for playing handball and identifying their image of handball. To answer these research questions, an exploratory sequential mixed methods study (QUAL ⇨ QUAN) has been implemented, the first part of which we report on here. The Weingarten research group conducted 35 semi-standardized interviews with 8–12-year-old children. The analysis was carried out using the qualitative content analysis method and MAXQDA 24 software, which led to the development of a deductive-inductive category system. On the basis of 35 interviews we found out that handball is an inspiring, success-oriented and community-oriented sport for many children. In addition, it promotes self-efficacy and team spirit. While the sport is perceived as dynamic by active players, children who do not actively play handball describe it as challenging due to a complex set of rules or the pressure to perform. Thus, our findings contribute to a differentiated view of the motive-image fit and can also contribute to the sustainable development of handball as a sport.
