Abstract
The research project examines the motives for career choices of student teachers in Germany and Japan. In Germany, the question of motivation is a matter of high urgency, due to the current shortage of teachers; until 2025 there are at least 26.300 primary school teachers needed in Germany. At the same time, global challenges (social justice, sustainability, dealing with diversity as well as the implementation of inclusion) mean that teachers all over the world are confronted with similar expectations, thus changing the profession on an international basis. For this reason, an international comparison of the career choice motives of student teachers seems highly relevant. What are the reasons for choosing the teacher profession today and what kind of young people are interested in this career path? The answers to these questions can be used to derive concepts for initial and in-service training courses for teachers.
The current state of research on teachers' career choices in Germany can be divided into three areas (a) classical motives such as interest in working with children, desired profession and financial security and (b) decisions between professional requirements and personal returns and (c) concepts on educational advancement.
The individual factors that influence the choice of career are manifold. It can be assumed that there are country-specific differences (depending on the context of the respective education system), but also international similarities (due to global challenges such as dealing with a heterogeneous student body). This makes a precise empirical description of the current motivations of student teachers in an international comparison all the more important. This qualitative research project, whose interim results are presented and discussed, aims to address these issues.
The main research question is: What are the motives for the career choice of student teachers?

The research project can be divided into two phases, of which the first phase has been completed so far. In Phase I empirical data were collected in Germany. In Phase II, data for an international comparison is collected in Japan – initial data is already available.
In April 2019, biographical notes were collected in Germany from student teachers in three different federal states (Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria). In September 2019, comparable data were collected in Japan at the Kyoto University of Education. The students who wrote the biographical note study primary, secondary and special needs education and have different major subjects. They all had in common that they were asked to write an essay about their personal reasons to become a teacher in the very beginning of their studies. Participation in the study was voluntary.
The empirical material was analyzed qualitatively by means of inductive category formation. An exploratory-descriptive analysis of the material was carried out. In this first analysis step, no distinction was made between texts from Germany and texts from Japan. Only in a second step the analysis was focused on the comparison between the texts from Germany and Japan searching for minimal (similarities) and maximal contrasts (differences).
